Walking in the footsteps of Romans
In partnership with Arbeia Roman Fort we completed the second in our series of walks exploring the coastal heritage of South Tyneside.
The walk started with a tour of the lighthouse Souter Lighthouse and the Leas then we made our way down to Trow Rocks, exploring the geology of the area along the way.
We also noticed the abundance of Pyramid Orchids on the Leas and a bird watcher pointed out a family of kestrels nesting in the lime kilns.
Our walk ended at Sandhaven beach, which was recently voted Sunday Times Beach of The Year 2022. Our thanks go to geologist Simon Hendry who led our walk and generously shared his knowledge with us.
