Coastal Sound Lab: Deep Time Sound Walk

15th 2024

Can you imagine the sounds of the Permian limestone landscape 250, 000 million years ago or what it might sound like that far into the future?

Join geologist Dave Roberts and artist Rob Smith on a sound walk into the geological deep time of Fulwell Quarry, Sunderland.

The North East coast is a unique and extraordinary place, full of geological wonders, both natural and man-made. Explore the limestone rocks that surround the sound mirror through listening to this ancient landscape. Hear the stories of now vanished tropical seas and long extinct fish, and consider how technology can help us imagine the changing geology of the earth.

This event is a SeaScape collaboration with Reading the Rocks. The https://readingtherocks.com/  website takes you on a journey exploring the ancient swamps and tropical reefs of the Carboniferous and Permian periods, through to the ice ages of the Quaternary period and on to discover the wonders of our present-day coastline.
