What is Shoresearch? 

Shoresearch is the Wildlife Trust’s national citizen science project. It’s a user-friendly and fun method of exploring the shore and recording the species and habitats found there. Durham Wildlife Trust will provide Shoresearch training at the survey, so why not come along and learn with us? It’s a great way to explore our local coast, learn more about the wildlife found there and add to our understanding of this important habitat. 

What do we do? 

We work in small groups to explore a certain area of the rocky shore and record the species that we find there, photographing the habitats and species found. When we’ve finished on the shore, usually in about 2 – 3 hours, we gather together afterwards to discuss our findings.

What happens to the information collected? 

All the records gathered by Shoresearch will be made available for all by the Environmental Records Information Centre North East (ERIC NE). The information helps us monitor change on the shore and provides biological information to counter potential threats.

Who can take part? 

Anyone aged 16 plus. The shore can be slippery and hard to access so you do need to be fairly fit and mobile to take part. We also ask that under 18’s are accompanied by an adult. 

If you are keen to learn and happy to give up a few hours of your time you are welcome. Prior knowledge of marine life is not necessary, but it is still great for those that do already have a good level of knowledge.
